Readings

When choosing an Indigenous reading for your classroom it is important that you keep the following three things in mind (ERLC, 2017):

  1. Authenticity - has the book been written or illustrated by an Indigenous person? Was the book written and or illustrated with Indigenous people or just about Indigenous people?

  2. Appropriation - how does the book represent Indigenous people and are the pictures appropriate for the content?

  3. Stereotypes - look at the characters, what are they wearing and how are they portrayed? What year was the book written in?

Initial Resource

The following link will provide you with access to an Indigenous Literature Kit. The kit has dozens of books you can read with students in all grades (K-12). Each book is explicitly tied to various aspects of Indigeneity, a subject area and Alberta Education curriculum ties for the subject. Lesson ideas are also included for each book.
